We are less than one week from Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Jesus has been preparing us for the fact that he must go to Jerusalem, he must suffer, he must die. Jesus is himself preparing mentally for all the situations that he will face. He's visiting with his good friends, Mary and Martha. He's talking to the disciples with a new urgency - 'this is what the Kingdom of God is, listen to these parables, learn because soon I will not be with you.' 'Who do you say that I am?' 'Be prepared.' Jesus is preparing us as well as mentally preparing himself for the volatile and emotional week that is sandwiched between Palm Sunday and his triumphal entry into Jerusalem and Easter Sunday, his resurrection.
I, too, am preparing - mentally visualizing in my mind's eye what this week is for Jesus, anticipating how I will also prepare for the extremes of next week. On Friday and Saturday this week I will be joining our youth group in a 30-hour hunger fast, not eating, and using every hunger pain to remind me that this is Jesus' last leg of his journey. I will be reading from Scripture the parables of the Kingdom of Heaven. I will be considering the cost of discipleship, the cost of 'denying myself, picking up my cross, and following Jesus.'
How will you be readying yourself for Holy Week?
